Self Care Testimonial

I cannot afford to neglect self care because I think I don’t have time or can’t ‘afford’ it.

Recently, I gave myself permission to use some savings to go on a self care retreat at a hot springs.. Before the calendar time came for my trip, thoughts came to mind in an attempt to get me to cancel. The voice wanted me to believe there were so many other pressing matters and needs in my life, how can I justify spending money on a self care retreat? Grateful for the encouragement of family and friends reassuring me self care was exactly what I needed. I did not cancel. In fact, I included booking a long over due massage. I knew the combination of the mineral hot springs and a massage would be a tremendous gift to myself. There were no descriptions of what types of massage modalities each masseur offered. I went into detail of what I was looking for with the person making the appointment.

The hotel called the day before my arrival informing me my massage appointment would have to be moved or choose a different therapist. The options were not perfect and to keep the therapist that fit my needs, I chose the time slot that happened to be before I ever checked into my room. I was not thrilled with the idea of checking in after a massage, but that’s what happened. The massage therapist was perfectly matched for my needs. I was so blessed by what I had thought was an inconvenience in my plans. At the end of the massage, I knew I needed another treatment during my stay. At check in, I inquired as to my therapist’s schedule to book another massage. The only time available was the on day I was to check out. Without hesitation, I asked if the room was available for 1 more night. It was, I booked both the room and a 2nd massage. I unloaded my luggage then immediately went into the hot tub for a hot springs soak. As I gazed at the forest and hawks circling above, I was sure I had reached nirvana. Everything within began to settle down. The hotel restaurant only serves breakfast and lunch, thankfully I brought snacks and enough food so I did not need to leave the room for the remainder of my 1st day.

At dawn, I opened the door to the view and fragrance of the forest. My world was brighter, filled with gratitude, awareness and joy. The chatter in my mind was gone and I could hear in the silence. Simple messages yet so profound in that moment. “Slow Down”, “Notice the Light and the Shadow”, “Rhythm in Balance”, “Focus on Love”, I was in the presence of God.

The massages are 50 minutes and that is literally not enough time for me to feel complete in the massage. After my morning meditation and hot tub, I had the idea to find out if my massage therapist was available to give me 2 consecutive 50 minute treatments. She was! Amazing! There was not one thought of hesitation whatsoever. I knew I was giving myself the deep nurturing I had put off for way too long. And let me just say, during that massage there was some serious detoxing taking place in my body, mind and spirit! Everything was melting into healing.

At the time of check out I was in complete bliss and ready to re-enter the world. I will return to this sacred space for more self care in the not to distant future.

My message is this; don’t put off self care. You wouldn’t think of going very long without food and water. Self care is the nourishment needed to meet your goals and responsibilities with a smile on your face and a bounce in your step. Life requires care, don’t procrastinate or allow the mind to convince you it’s not ‘necessary’. It is not a luxury, it’s is a necessity!
