Life Brings Grief
Grief is one of the most painful of all human experiences and takes its toll on the mind, body and spirit! After my husband died, I spent 8 years grieving as I learned how to live life without him. Among the many friends I spoke with when he passed, our Tai Ji Master said this to me; “In the beginning grief is about the person you have ‘lost’, after that, it’s all about you.” It took a long time to embrace the truth and wisdom of his words. As the years passed, it became evident there was much work to be done in me.
Sometimes life gets messy. Recently, I experienced a traumatic incident in my life and fell into a deep state of grieving. A part of me was so devastated that I was unable to see the light of day. I was in a dark hole I desperately wanted to climb out of which at times seemed impossible. For a time, there was no escaping the heartbreak, anxiety, depression, tears, self-doubt, self-flagellation leading to self-evaluation. The feelings were all to familiar and I knew it was time to practice what I know and use the tools available for my support to once again walk through the gate to the other side.
I have grieved for relationships of those I hold dear, each one cracking my heart more widely open. One of the foremost realisations of my grieving was I suffer from “attachment” to those I love. Attachment brought great pain, living with the belief that I had some kind of control of holding onto anyone in this physical world. When I experienced loss, grief was triggered and I returned to my heart being devastated.
Grief is a window to the wounds buried deep within. If one fully embraces grief, the process becomes the gateway to transform suffering into being present to receiving life’s blessings. One of the primary gifts given throughout my years of grieving is waking up to the understanding that when I am living fully, mindfully in the present, I cannot be attached.
I have listed the tools that calmed the stormy seas of my heart, mind and soul, restoring balance.
Using these supplements, meditating, reading, writing, praying, crying, reaching out to family & close friends and a weekend with my grandchildren, I surrendered, allowing the healing that had laid dormant. Once again, the Light has returned, I can see clearly now.
